Kim Sandoval is a Mexican-American woman and artist living in a border town in the
state of Texas, United States. The videos created reflect the artist's experience and cultural
identity.
Candid is a representation of the drive to create work, particularly paintings, in the purest
of senses. It offers a glimpse into the artist’s psyche regarding video and its relation to traditional
mediums of art. The act of using video to create “a moving painting” offers a sense of release to
the inability to create a traditional painting. The work was created using a recording of the artist
as she answered questions regarding herself, her artistic process, and her views on art in
America. This specific section of the recording spoke volumes about what the artist felt “best
represented her.”
Healing is a dialogue on the mutually respected religious practices in the artist's
community. The work was dedicated to the indigenous women who came before her. “Women
who walk with wolves. Mexican American culture and the experiences shared over generations.”
The use of video allows for the artist to act out and emphasize the slow shifts over time from
“folk healing,” derived from Aztec and Mayan religions, to Christianity and Catholicism.
